How Do I Become a Small Group Leader?
Small Groups play a key role in helping our congregation accomplish its mission and takes steps in realizing its vision of making disciples. In order to have vital and effective Small Groups, our congregation needs a growing number of people who are willing and able to serve as Small Group Leaders.
This document provides basic information about what a Small Group Leader does, but it is only an introduction. Read through the information below, and if you believe God is calling you to consider serving as a Small Group Leader, fill out an application (see link at bottom of page). Mission of the Small Group Leader
Small Groups come together on a regular basis for a common purpose and are led by an equipped leader who intentionally cultivates an environment for discipleship and community that will assist them in their progress toward becoming more like Christ.
Personal Qualities of a Small Group Leader
A Small Group Leader is one who:
- desires a growing relationship with Christ;
- cares for people and encourages their growth;
- willingly accepts the responsibilities of serving as a Small Group Leader; and
- is open to learn and eager to grow as a person and as a Small Group Leader.
Desirable Skills in a Small Group Leader
A Small Group Leader possesses or is willing to develop the following skills and abilities:
- listens attentively and effectively;
- relates and communicates in a friendly, hospitable, and sensitive way toward others;
- is relaxed and comfortable in a group setting;
- is relatively at ease in a leadership role;
- delegates responsibilities to others; and
- naturally affirms and encourages others.
Qualifications to Be a Small Group Leader
A Small Group Leader is:
- a member of our congregation;
- is currently a member of a Small Group or has experience as a Small Group member; and
- feels the call of God to become a Small Group Leader.
How to Become a Small Group Leader
- apply to be considered as a Small Group Leader;
- commit to serve as a Small Group Leader for a period of at least one year after completing the Small Group Leader training;
- complete Small Group Leader Training;
- be commissioned as a Small Group Leader; and
- while leading a small group stay connected with the small group team through phone calls and occasional leader events and meetings.

- serve Christ in helping to make disciples;
- be equipped with knowledge and skills for leadership including; listening, caring, and spiritual growth;
- bless and influence the lives of others;
- develop meaningful relationships; and
- receive care and support when needed.
