CenterPoint: Christianity in the West
Christianity in the West—A Post-Christian Future?
- Tuesdays, January 12 - February 9, 2010, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm
- Synopsis: The spread of Christianity first began in the West, but now two of the primary mission fields are the United States and Europe. So what happened? Five centuries ago, Martin Luther started the Reformation of Christianity in Germany. But how did the land of Luther become the land of Hitler? And what was the response of faithful Christians? Today, much of Europe is deeply secular, barely remembering the faith that was the central identity of Europeans for so long. By examining how Central Europeans have wrestled with the relationship between their Christian faith and their culture, we will gain a better understanding of our own relationship between faith and culture. We will draw on the wisdom of Martin Luther, John Calvin, Martin Niemoeller, Detrich Bonhoeffer, and more. If you seek to be faithful to Christ Jesus at this time and place in history, this class is for you.
- This class will be taught by Fred Beuttler who currently serves as the Deputy Historian for the House of Representatives and has previously served as a history professor at several universities and seminaries.
- Cost: $25
