When an individual is first diagnosed with cancer, there is a need for contact with someone who can identify with and appreciate the sense of fear, disorientation and shock that diagnosis of such a serious illness can bring. Often there is no one to whom the person can turn in that time between initial diagnosis and entering the care of experienced healthcare staff.
Christian Cancer Companions (CCC) was formed a few years ago by members of VPC who were all cancer survivors and felt called to outreach to individuals newly diagnosed with cancer, letting them know there were people who had been through what they were facing. If you know someone who would benefit from this support, feel free to invite them.
Trained volunteers are cancer survivors, and a special effort will be made to match the cancer diagnosis of the volunteer with the newly diagnosed person. CCC volunteers will call or visit individuals in this bridge of time between diagnosis and the beginning of treatment offering appropriate support.
