ESOL / ESL Class

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL or ESL) is a local community outreach mission of Vienna Presbyterian Church (VPC).  This mission offers all adult ESOL students, whether residing in our community temporarily or permanently, a low-cost opportunity for instruction and practice in both written and spoken English.  We offer beginning, intermediate and advanced level classes with the goal of improving English communication skills.

Program Highlights

  • Recipient of the Fairfax County Human Rights Award for 2007
  • Open enrollment – adults may join our classes at any time during the school year (September through May) until classes are filled
  • Free childcare (limited space available)
  • Small classes where friendships are built
  • Current student enrollment represents 48 different countries
  • Over 480 people were served in some capacity through this ministry last year
  • Students of various religious traditions are welcomed and respected
  • Separate Christian Bible-based instruction for interested students
  • Tutoring for citizenship preparation
  • Program-wide activities celebrating holidays (e.g., Thanksgiving, Christmas, Lunar New Year, and Easter)
  • An international dinner for all students and their families
  • End-of-year graduation celebration
  • Social services support as available
  • Computer instruction in our computer lab for registered intermediate and advanced students (on a limited basis)

Registration

  • Fee:  $30 for the year
  • Registration Dates (beginning of year):
    • Mondays & Wednesdays:  Sep 7, 12, 14, 2011 from 9:30 am - 11:15 am
    • Tuesdays & Thursdays:  Sep 6, 8, 13, 15, 2011 from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Open enrollment – adults may join our classes at any time during the school year (September through May) until classes are filled

Class Schedules

  • September through May
  • We follow Fairfax County Public School weather closing policy.
  • Class Schedules:
    • First Semester - 2011:
      AM Classes meet Mondays & Wednesdays, 9:30 to 11:15 am, beginning Sep 19
      PM Classes meet Tuesdays & Thursdays, 7:30 to 9:00 pm, beginning Sep 20
    • Second Semester - 2012:
      AM Classes meet Mondays & Wednesdays, 9:30 to 11:15 am, beginning Jan 2
      PM Classes meet Tuesdays & Thursdays, 7:30 to 9:00 pm, beginning Jan 3
  • ESOL classes meet on the third floor of the Ministry Center.
  • Sunday/Monday Bible classes are offered.
