Letters from Haiti

Karen Carr

Karen Carr writes:

I wanted to take a few minutes to update you on CCH's effort to help Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake and to thank you for your prayers and gifts of compassion that have allowed us to respond so quickly.  Without your help, CCH would not have been able nor continue to be able to heal and help thousands who are injured, hungry, thirsty, and lost without Christ.

I've attached some recent pictures (see below) and will forward another update from Brian Hays that came in yesterday.  Knox Singleton and I spent quite a bit of time in Haiti with 3 medical teams out of the 8 that have been in Haiti since the earthquake.  What broke my heart the most was not only the people who were injured, but the children and families living in "tent cities" in Jacmel... some 6,000 in one area alone.  Most have lost their homes and are forced to live in deplorable conditions under cardboard, metal sheeting, plastic or whatever they can find.  CCH has been providing emergency medical care there with several French teams to treat the wounded, sick and injured, providing medical supplies, as well as flying in food and water from the Dominican Republic.  It has been a tremendous witness of Christ's love as we serve on behalf of VPC as Jesus' hands and feet... and for the children, women and men who have literally lost their hands and feet, CCH is praying about our role in restoring their lives to wholeness in the future.  We covet your prayers as we discern God's will and go where He leads us.

Thank you for giving us the privilege of serving with you to help heal so many in Haiti and share Christ's mercy and love.  May God bless you,

Karen

Since the earthquake, CCH with the Lord's help has:

  • treated over 10,000 patients in PAP, Pignon, Jacmel, Cay Jacmel, and Leogane;
  • shipped in 22 tons of medical supplies including a 16 ton mobile Operating Unit;
  • shipped in 2 tons of food and water, 1 ton of tents and tarps, with more cargo planes flying in this week ($1 provide 1 lb. of food directly to areas where 50-75% of the structures were damaged and people are living in tents cities to survive);
  • sent in 8 medical teams (68 doctors and nurses) to some of the most devastated areas of Haiti including Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, Cay Jacmel, Pignon, and Leogane;
  • organized the collection and distribution of 10 tons of medical supplies for the Southwest Department of Haiti in cooperation with the Haitian Health Minister of the Southwest;
  • established ambulatory care system fro patient transfer and treatment in the Jacmel region; and
  • provided ongoing triage and primary care at Hospital Saint Michel in Jacmel and surgical care at Emmanuel Hospital in Cay Jacmel, for over 1,000 patients a week.
