VPC Summer Missions Project to Colombia!  June 13-24, 2013

S t r e t c h   y o u r s e l f… way south of the border, to Colombia, South America for an adventure in service to others and personal spiritual growth.  This year VPC will commission 10 Christian servants literally to “plant seeds for the future” of the Iglesia Presbiteriana de Colombia.

If you are college age or older, you are invited to join Dave and Joan Gifford from June 13 to June 24 on VPC’s second SMP to plant Teak seedlings with the Presbiterio de Urabá.  This is a long-range effort to provide a source of retirement income for pastors serving churches in rural Colombia.

Read a detailed description of this project.

Emphasis on People-to-People Fellowship

We’ll spend most of our days planting teca.  But much of our time we’ll be getting to know the Colombian people.  We’ll work and worship together, share favorite scripture verses, visit their homes and take meals together.  We’ll listen to their music, their life stories.  We’ll pray together, and when we’re done, play a little fútbol, Colombian style!  We’ll share our own experiences and offer a sewing workshop.  We’ll learn of Colombia’s years of civil conflict and its impact on those it displaced.  Most importantly, we’ll witness the depth and breadth of their faith in el señor Jesucristo.  And everyone will have a chance to practice el español!

We’ll be in a rural, isolated area accessible by SUV only.  We’ll sleep on mattresses on the floor of the church, or in hammocks.  Mosquitoes are guaranteed; it will be hot and humid.  You can expect latrines, but no comfy showers like at home.  We’ll eat what our hosts eat every day – poultry, or fish, maybe some beef, rice, plantains, and yucca, all quite delicious and safe.  Drinking water is bottled or boiled.  The area is safe and patrolled by a national police force.  Further, we’ll be accompanied at every step by a member of the Presbyterian Church of Colombia.  There is cell phone coverage at the worksite.
