Missions

We desire to serve those in need and to follow Christ’s mission to deploy more workers into the harvest field.

We seek workers who are engaged in Praying for the discernment of God’s will, Sharing the news of the gospel with compassion, Caring for the least of these brothers and sisters, and Daring to stand up for justice. As a community of disciples seeking to live like Jesus Christ, our “mission” is to work toward becoming like Christ Together for the World. By loving and serving others, we share Christ’s love and grow as His disciples. VPC offers multiple avenues for individuals to serve people locally, nationally, and internationally—working as the hands and feet of Jesus. From children’s missions programs in the metro-DC area to national and international missions projects—VPC invites you to explore the many ways available to serve God and our neighbors.

VPC strives to truly be a “missional” church, where each believer reaches out to the community with a Christian message of hope, love, and faith. Living missionally means acting like disciples who are sent into the world, as he was, to proclaim His redemptive love and His kingdom. We have the power to spread Jesus’ love through action. We encourage you to think about your mission and how you are being called to serve others today. Vienna Presbyterian is committed to spreading God’s love to the wider community. Much is needed locally, nationally and internationally. Help us care for those in need. Join in an upcoming event or learn more about our partners through special luncheons and on Facebook! Check out our local events for more information!

Missions is not primarily an activity of the church, but rather an attribute of God. Our mission flows from the very nature of God: as the Father sending His Son; God the Father and Son sending the Spirit; and God the Father, Son and Spirit sending the church into the world.

Bags of Love Food Distribution

The impact of the COVID virus has been devastating for those who were already living in the margins.  Many of our friends in Vienna and the surrounding areas experienced lost jobs or reduced wages, and in some cases, will be climbing out of increased debt for years to come.  VPC became a CARES Act partner by signing agreements with Food for Others and Capital Area Food Bank.  We’ve also asked the congregation to provide 150 – 200 substantial bags of groceries for satellite sites where we’ve discovered great need.  We also have formed important relationships with other churches that have a similar desire to care for our brothers and sisters – Vienna Baptist, NewSong Church, Orchard Church and Grace Community. Together, we distribute over 17,000 pounds of food each month, providing for 450 families!  Our partnership agreement runs through January of 2022! Please join this effort by signing up to supply groceries, unload and package the Bags of Love food, or help with the distributions. Questions:  Contact Susan Kenney

Hypothermia Prevention Program

For the past 6 years, VPC has provided shelter and meals for those experiencing homelessness in the cold months. Many hands were needed as we opened our doors to serve as a shelter for homeless men and women in our Northern Virginia. The sad reality is that COVID will deprive us of the opportunity to personally connect with our guests!  However, we still have the opportunity to serve as Christ’s hands and feet by providing food for the 50 guests that we would have typically welcomed!  Fairfax County will provide shelter, and churches are invited to help feed them.  We’ve agreed to feed our friends December 27th through January 3rd.  For the safety of our guests and volunteers, we’ll collect food at VPC to provide a continental breakfast and a bag lunch, we will ask for volunteers to order dinner through designated local restaurants.  Help support our small Vienna businesses AND provide a meal for those experiencing homelessness during this very difficult timeSign up to help.  Contact Sue Hamblen.

Days for Girls

Until we can meet in person again, Days for Girls encourages tailors and those who perform tasks that don’t require sewing skills, to continue their efforts at home.  This project includes cutting, sewing, and assembling sustainable feminine hygiene kits, which allow girls in impoverished areas to manage their monthly period for up to 3 years. Many of our mission partner have been the grateful recipients of these kits and they can truly change lives. Support for Domestic Violence Survivors

Until the COVID restrictions required this support group to meet remotely, VPC provided dinner for survivors enrolled in the Break the Cycle recovery group facilitated by The Women’s Center. This simple act of hospitality has ensured that the victims feel loved and cared for as they strive for a better life!  When they return to in person meetings, we’ll be there with our love offering of a healthy meal.

Bethany Women’s Center and Second Story

These shelters regularly need our food support. The easy-to-prepare recipes and sign-up sheet are located outside the kitchen door in a box on the wall. Preparing these meals is a great way for students to complete volunteer hours.  This outreach ministry is tremendously appreciated by both shelters.  For more information, contact Cindy Alls at 703.222.3657.

ESOL

VPC’s award winning ESOL program made the pivot to on-line instruction in a remarkable way!  Through gentle and patient instruction, students and teachers mastered the world of Zoom! Materials are now delivered to the students’ homes, and volunteers teach and assist with learning English on Monday and Wednesday mornings and Tuesday and Thursday evenings. All classes are taught in English, and teaching experience is not required. We provide training and support for teachers and staff two teachers for each online class. VPC’s outreach to lower income areas of Vienna is now Belong!

Belong! is the love of Christ in action.  Belong! offers a range of opportunities for the community –  to create spiritual, physical and economic well-being. The new name expresses our great desire to encourage a sense of belonging in our community, where many have lived in relative isolation due to language, social, and economic barriers.  The tag line, “Neighbors loving neighbors”, reflects the love that we have received from God, and the love that we give and receive from others.
